Therapy

This session will focus on early
theories of play and play therapy as well as on
prominent theorists. A brief overview of twelve
theories will be presented. A study of the history
ofplay therapy is part of the educational
requirements for becoming a Registered Play
Therapist with Association for Play Therapy. |

Presenter: Kathryn Boone, LPC, RPT-S |
|
Kathryn Boone has been in private
practice for fifteen years and has been a Registered
Play Therapist - Supervisor for ten years. She was
the first president of Missouri Association for Play
Therapy and served on the education committee
following her presidency. Kathryn has presented many
times both locally and nationally on various topics
related to play therapy. One of the topics she has
presented numerous times is the History of Play
Therapy. |

Parent Training:
A Key Element in Enhancing the Play Therapy
Process

This workshop will present a
model for therapists to work with parents on
specific parenting skills. You will learn parenting
skills which will facilitate the positive results of
play therapy. These skills will teach parents to
listen with empathy, to set limits, to enforce
logical consequences and much more. A parent packet
will be provided. |

|
Barbara Hylton is a licensed
professional counselor in private practice at
Community Counseling Services in Nixa, MO. She has
previously been employed as a school counselor and
has extensive experience in play therapy. She is a
past president of MAPT and currently is a member of
the MAPT education board. Barbara was voted 1998
Play Therapist of the year in the school setting by
MAPT and 1998 Elementary Counselor of the year by
SMSCA. |

Methods and Techniques in Family Play Therapy

This workshop will provide a
basic foundation in play therapy practice with
families and children. Specifically, it will discuss
key concepts and issues related to working with
children and their families and the rationale behind
using play therapy in these situations. It will also
provide instruction on how to apply and interpret
specific family play therapy interventions. Video
clips and clinical vignettes will be used to
illustrate these techniques. |

Presenter: Darryl R. Haslam, LCSW, RPT |
|
Darryl R. Haslam is a core
faculty member in the Marriage and Family Therapy
Program at the Forest Institute of Professional
Psychology in Springfield. He is a Licensed Clinical
Social Worker and a Registered Play Therapist with
over 11 years of clinical experience in the field.
He is also a Ph.D. candidate in Marriage and Family
Therapy from Texas Tech University, which he hopes
to complete this summer. Lastly, he currently serves
in the Air Force Reserves as a clinical social
worker and was active duty for three years. |

| Sandplay Therapy

This session will present an
overview of Sandplay Therapy as conceptualized by
Dora Kalff and others who developed the technique
based on the theory of C.G. Jung. The background of
this therapy will be reviewed. There will be a focus
on the use of the therapy with children and
adolescents |

Clinical Psychologist, Jungian Analyst |
|
Frances Parks is a licensed
psychologist and has a diploma in Analytical
Psychology. She is currently Dean of Student and
Alumni Services at Forest Institute of Professional
Psychology, where she oversees the program providing
advisement and support for students in the graduate
program. |

| Child Therapy That
Fits: Developmentally Appropriate Treatment for
Common Childhood Disorders |
|
This workshop provides an array
of play therapy techniques to help play therapists
provide the most effective treatment possible to fit
the developmental and cognitive level of children
with Mood Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, and
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. This
relatively new workshop was requested twice as many
times in 2003 as it was in 2001, which suggests
increasing interest in this area. |

Presenter: Janine S. Shelby, Ph.D. |
|
Janine Shelby is an Assistant
Professor of Psychiatry at Harbor-UCLA Medical
Center. She is a Board Certified Expert in Traumatic
Stress and the President of the Association for Play
Therapy's Foundation. Dr. Shelby is a consultant for
the National Center for Child Traumatic Stress, and
has been a consultant for numerous humanitarian
relief agencies. Her work has included humanitarian
aid to Asia, Latin America, Russia, the former
Yugoslavia, and Western Europe. Dr. Shelby recently
received the APT Humanitarian Service Award. She has
presented hundreds of presentations nationally as
well as internationally, and appeared in the
National American Red Cross Training Video. Her
publications and presentations focus on practical,
developmentally appropriate, evidence-informed play
techniques to help traumatized children and their
families.

Group Supervision will be offered
during the conference by several Registered Play
Therapist Supervisors. Registration for Group
Supervision will be at the door and limited to 10
members per supervisor.
