How do I apply to the English Language Institute?
You may apply online by clicking on the “Apply Online” link, completing the application, and sending it electronically. Or you may fax the complete application to 417-836-4784.

In addition to the application, you must send an official letter from your bank, stating that you have a minimum of $18,446 (US dollars) in an account that is designated for your education. This amount is required for a one-year ($7,274 for a semester) student visa for study in the English Language Institute. If your spouse will accompany, please add an additional $4000.  If your child or children will accompany, each dependent requires an additional $2000.

You must also send us a copy of your high school (secondary school) or university transcripts.

You may pay the $100 application fee (which includes express mail fee to send your I-20) by credit card or money order. If you pay by credit card, please send us the following information: name of cardholder, number on the card, date of expiration, verification number (a 3-digit number on the back of your credit card where your signature is), and type of credit card (Master Card, Visa, American Express).

May I fax everything?
Yes, you may fax all of the required documents to 417-836-4784.

Is there a deadline for applying to the ELI?
You should apply as early as possible in order to obtain your student visa. There is no deadline by which you must apply, but we encourage you to apply more than 60 days before the semester begins.

May I study in the ELI if I have not finished high school?
You may study in the ELI, but you cannot be admitted to the university until you finish high school or complete an equivalency exam (GED).

How long are the semesters?
The ELI follows the university schedule of 16-week fall and spring semesters and 8-week summer semesters. See English Language Institute Calendar.

How long must I study English before I can enter the University?
The length of time that our students stay in the ELI depends on several factors, including the level of proficiency at which they begin the program, how much English they speak outside of class, and how motivated they are to improve their skills. Most students who come into the program at an advanced level spend one semester in the ELI. Students who test into the lower two levels should expect to spend one year in the ELI.

Will successful completion of the ELI satisfy the English proficiency requirement of the University (Missouri State University)?
Yes. According to the Missouri State University Undergraduate Catalog, "The English language requirement for admission to Missouri State University will be met when the applicant has submitted proof of a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). (See table below for scores required.) The TOEFL requirement for all levels can also be met by completing the Missouri State University English Language Institute, a full time intensive English program."

Tuition (instructional fee) and activity fees are due on the third day of the ELI orientation.

Should I live on campus in university housing?
We recommend that you live on campus, especially if you have an American roommate. You will have many more opportunities to practice speaking English, to build your vocabulary (including idioms), and to better understand American culture. For more information about on-campus housing, contact the Residence Life Director at http://www.missouristate.edu/reslife

How do I know which level I will be in?
You will be placed in the appropriate level after you have taken the placement tests the week before classes begin. The tests include listening comprehension, writing skills, grammar skills, reading comprehension, and oral communication skills.

What will my daily schedule be in the ELI?
Monday through Thursday, you will be in class from 9:00am till 3:00pm (with an hour of lunch break) and Friday from 9:00am till 12:00pm.

How much time should I allow for the I-20 to arrive?
Once we have received all of the necessary items (completed application, passport copy, transcripts, financial documentation, and application fee), we will admit you to the English Language Institute and issue your I-20 and admission letter. The admission process usually takes around a week to ten days.

When do I need to arrive in Springfield?
You should plan to arrive ten days before the semester classes begin. That will give you the opportunity to adjust to the time change before you take your placement tests. If you arrive after the date the placement tests are given, you will be assessed a $50 late arrival fee. Please be aware that if you are staying in the MSU dorms, your room will not be available until the weekend before classes begin and you will need to make arrangements to stay with a friend or at a hotel until your room becomes available.
